Shoubu-Yu, on Children's Day

Dear readers,

May 5th is the Children's Day, and it is actually traditionally a SEKKU (a kind of celebration day) for boys.

I make "SHOUBU YU" yesterday.

Shoubu Yu, is a bath of leaves of SHOUBU (Japanese iris) . The name of this iris, SHOUBU is same pronounce of "勝負" -which means a game, a try, a fight. We wish a victory for any Shoubu.

Also, old people says put the leave around your head, which would make you "smart".

I do not know why.

New Year

Dear everyone,
I would like to write about New Year in Japan. I should have write about it earlier I think.
Here are some photos which I took this year (2009).
I wish you enjoy this post.

We celebrate Oshougatasu to have special cosine, OSECHI ryouri.

pic#1 (left) Ozouni , the mainShiitake mushroom, Takenoko(Bamboo sprout), Naruto (Fish dimpling) , Chicken, and MOCHI (rice cake) in Shouyu (Soy source) based soup.

pic#2 (centre) Kazunoko and Kouhaku (Red and white)

Namasupic#3 (right) Nimono , Sashimi, Datemaki, Kamaboko

pic #4 Kurikinton (Chestnuts sweets), Kuromame beans, Ikura (Salmon roe)

Osechi was prepared in the end of previous year and we do not work (even nor cook) on the first day in the new year.Dishes are different in each families and each districts. But most of Osechi dishes are similar because they have some meanings and wishes for the coming new year.
Red and white coloured one is for meaning of celebrating. Mame (beans) are for your work hard, Mame-mame shiku (=hand and foot) Kurikinton is colour of gold =fortune. Ikura (salmon roe) are wishes for prosperous of your family.... and so on.

Also, Kanzashi have been also updated.

Aki Nai ~ No Autumn~

I found very interesting thing. I am quite sure you think this is very interesting too.

I took this photo in front of a small bar, I am not sure this word is correct in English though. You can find these kind of bar at uncommon streets and not big but only someone who knows this street comes and become customers.

Anyway, this photo.

This is a kind of door light. If this bar is open, the light will be lit up.

But as you see, there are no any WORDS on it. Just illustrations.

However, we knows this door light sign means "OPEN" or "CLOSED" from these illustrations.

Flower in the right above means SAKURA or HANA = SPRING (HARU, in japanese)

And the below of the flower, you can see FIREWORKS, this means SUMMER (NATSU in Japanese), and next to the fire works, there is "YUKI" = SNOW. This means WINTER (FUYU).

So, now, you find there are no AUTUMN =AKI.

The sign says " NO AUTUMN = AKI NAI (Nai = no, or not)

And the word AKINAI means "BUSSINESS" in japanese.

So, this sign tells you "we are ON bussiness" or "NOT ON bussiness".

In same way, there are a sign which has only three Kanji on it.

This is same meaning.
We have many interesting signs in the city.
These are a kind of word-playing we have enjoyed since EDO period.
If we find something new, I will let you know.
